      Frequently Asked Questions

What goes on during your camp?

Our day commences with two hours of the chosen art medium, followed by an hour of yoga, and then lunch at 12P.  Half day participants will leave at 1230p.  Please pack lunch as this is not included in our price. Healthy snacks are provided through the day. This applies to half day students as well.
Art instruction, supplies, healthy snack, and water are included in our price. After lunch we offer indoor recess through board games, puzzles, coloring, reading, etc. If the children ask for outside time, we walk the property or do yoga outside.
Board Games are included during breaks to encourage teamwork and collaboration.
Our afternoons begin with art history and an art project. The participants will design their art based upon the artist and art medium they learned about that day. Following art history and the project, we will move into the Alternative Art Hour (AAH) with a local artist or maker to teach their art. AAH is offered to full day students only. To participate in this activity you must sign up for full day. The breakdown of who is attending each week is located on the individual registration pages for each month. AAH includes ceramic making, crafting, origami, healthy eating and Ayurvedic tea making, cookie decorating, animal awareness, plant talk, and more.

What are the ages of children who attend?

Our camp is geared for children ages 5-13. We request children ages 5-6 sign up for half day sessions. Children ages 7 and up are welcome to sign up for full day.
We offer many exciting projects for your child to explore tailored each week to the participants attending. For those with some art experience, we will provide more challenging objectives for them to accomplish. The younger individuals will receive the basic objectives to accomplish each art project.  Each week is programmed to the experience of the attendees. This means if your child is attending our camp for 3 weeks, he/she will have three weeks of different projects to complete. Many students return each week, and each month, keeping us teachers on our toes with the curriculum.

How many students attend each week?

Our studio places a limit of 16 kids per week (10 kids full day students, 5 half day students) to provide a more concentrated learning experience.

Important Information on Food & Snacks in our studios

The children use a lot of brainpower during the day and require fruits and veggies to sustain themselves until 430p.  This applies to half-day students as well. Please make sure to pack a healthy lunch for your child as lunch is not included in our price.  This year we will provide two healthy snacks each day to your little ones (one in morning / one in afternoon). If your child has specific food allergies, we ask you to send them with two snacks they are able to eat. Candy, Cookies, Chocolate, and soft drinks ARE NOT healthy snacks and NOT ALLOWED in our studios. These items cause sugar burnout and fatigue. We will take any of these items and throw them out when found. Please respect our request to encourage healthy eating habits in all children.

Who are the teachers at your summer camp?

Here is the breakdown of who will be teaching for the summer 2022.

The Alternative Art Hour:. Each week the Mindful Movement Summer Camp will ask a local artist to provide the kids with an hour class in their art profession. This alternative art hour is for full-time students only. Below is the breakdown of afternoon classes offered to full-day students:

Ceramics with Ms. K (Kaleigh Ann Ceramics)

      Offered June Wk 1 & 3, July Wk 2 & 4, Aug Wk 2
Ceramics: The noted weeks summer camp includes a one-and-a-half-hour session of ceramics making with Ms. Kaleigh Anne Howe. Ms. K will be guiding the children virtually through Zoom alongside Mrs. Sarah through the process of handmade pinched pottery. After the pottery is completed we will allow drying overnight. On day two the children will use a technique called under glazing to paint their piece. Under glazing is a clay-based stain used much like watercolor or acrylic. The children will create two pieces to be fired. We will keep the ceramics to dry for two weeks, and fire them with a clear gloss overglaze. You will be notified by email when they are ready for pick up at our studios.

        What are your COVID-19 Procedures?

Our teachers work very hard to provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment for your little one(s). Mindful learning begins at home and continues at The Art Cellar of Houston. We will continue to follow the Independent School Districts COVID guidelines maintaining the following requirements for all children as of 2022:
        • We will show the children how surgeons wash their hands. They will be required to wash their hands in this manner when they arrive, at both snack times, before and after lunch, and for the alternate art hour.
        • ALL children are required to clean up after themselves following each project. These duties include pick up after each art project, wiping down tables, sweeping, wiping the games they play with, moving tables and chairs for yoga, and lunch, etc.
        • We will continue to host 15 kids each week at our summer art camp. Each table will have two children to work from each day. We sanitize our studio completely at the end of each day with a combination of Melaleuca Disinfectant and Thieves Multipurpose Cleaner.
