Art Cellar Houston Homeschool Art Program 2024

Wednesdays from 10-1130A

Ages 5+

Art Cellar Houston Home School Art Class is every other Wednesday from 10-1130a; Breaks every 30 minutes (as needed).

This Home School Art class is for children ages 5-12 seeking an in-depth art experience revolving around art history and various forms of art. Each class begins with 15-20 minutes of an art history story on an artist. We then provide the children with step-by-step instructions to create their own masterpieces based on that artist's medium and/or technique. Children will be working on a different medium each week. This link is to provide you the option to reserve each month we are in session for the 2023-2024 school year.
The following is a synopsis of the mediums we will be working through over a ten-week period and not an actual account of our classes week by week. For details about our classes offered each week, please see our "Class Calendar" located on the menu bar.

Acrylic Painting on Canvas
Children will learn the basic technique of sketching with a paintbrush, the different forms of painting we teach in our studio, and how to mix and blend colors to create highlights and shading. Each painting will revolve around the art history artist and their style.

Sketching Basics
We will uncover the basics of sketch creating two drawings reflecting highlights and shading. The first part of the class will consist of four warm-up sketches inspiring the children to explore their creative juices. The second drawing will be wrapped around the artist we learned about this week.  We will focus on highlighting and shading each drawing with pencils and charcoal.
Pastels
We will teach the essentials of how to color with Pastels. This includes color blocking, layering, and using highlights to blend, creating dimensions with colors.
Alcohol Inks on tiles
Alcohol inks are an acid-free, highly pigmented, and fast-drying medium to be used on non-porous surfaces.  We paint on ceramic tiles of various sizes, coffee cups, tea plates, and Yupo Paper, using cotton balls, Q-tips, and other household items to create our own unique designs.
Watercolor Basics
We will explore the color wash technique, and practice layering light, medium, and dark colors to create dimension.
Paper Mache Sculpture Making Part 1
In this fun class, we show children how to build a sculpture with household products to create dimensions. Design and layering are a part of this session.

Paper Mache Sculpture Making Part 2
In this second edition of our sculpture building class, we show children how to paint their sculptures in detail or in abstract form.
Acrylic Pour "The Science Experiment"
The acrylic pour class is what we call "The Science Experiment", combining acrylic paint, pouring medium, and liquids that evaporate once they blend with acrylic paint (H2O or Isopropyl Alcohol). Once they evaporate the results leave behind some pretty cool cells and creatures.

Exploring Anime with Pencil Colors and Pastels
We will review the history of Anime, the founding fathers, and how anime has progressed through the decades. We will guide participants to create their own anime character and theme. If time allows, we will do a second drawing with anime animals.

Super Hero Canvas Painting
Acrylic painting on canvas will explore the primary colors, blending to create secondary and tertiary colors, drawing with a paintbrush, and creating dimensions with colors.
Air Dry Clay
For this class, we will step into the world of ceramics to provide children with the technique to create their own pinch pot air-dry clay creations.  This is a two-part class where we will create during the first week and then allow time to dry. In the following class we will be completing our ceramics with paint, varnish, and embellishments.

Please bring your own snacks and beverages as this is not included in our price!  Art supplies and instructions will be provided to your child.
